2D Design: Project 2: Principles of Gestalt

The goal of this project was to study four Gestalt concepts: Closure, Continuance, Similarity and Proximity. The study of gestalt originated in Germany in the 1920s. It is a form of psychology that is interested in higher order cognitive processes relative to behaviorism.

Additional goals:
• To become sensitive to the picture plane as a 2-dimensional spatial field and the picture frame as the boundary containing the image.
• To become aware of the necessity of an underlying organization of all the pictorial elements that are part of any composition and the principles that guide that organization.
• To consider and explore various methods, media and craft techniques (traditional and electronic) to create an effective solution and presentation of this project.

We began by sketching numerous thumbnail roughs in marker. We took the best three options and created marker sketches to scale. Finally, we brought the chosen option into Illustrator.
